Yasmina Alaoui was born in New York in 1977 and is of French and Moroccan descent. She first studied Fine Arts at the Carrousel du Louvre in Paris. She later attended the College of William & Mary, where she initially studied medicine before turning to sculpture and earning a BA in Sculpture. She subsequently studied film at New York University. She currently lives between New York and Marrakech.
Rooted in a multicultural background, Alaoui’s practice moves fluidly between materials, images, and disciplines. Her work spans photography, sculpture, painting, drawing, film, and music, forming a diverse body of work that ranges from figurative compositions to geometric and minimalist abstraction.
She received the Award for Cultural Diversity at the 2018 Dakar Biennale.
Yasmina Alaoui est née à New York en 1977. D’origine marocaine et française, elle étudie d’abord les beaux-arts au Carrousel du Louvre à Paris. Elle poursuit ensuite ses études au College of William & Mary, où elle commence par étudier la médecine avant de se tourner vers la sculpture, discipline dans laquelle elle obtient un Bachelor of Arts. Elle étudie par la suite le cinéma à la New York University. Elle vit actuellement entre New York et Marrakech.
Ancrée dans un parcours multiculturel, la pratique d’Alaoui se déploie librement entre images, matières et disciplines. Son travail couvre la photographie, la sculpture, la peinture, le dessin, le film et la musique, constituant un corpus d’œuvres varié allant de compositions figuratives à des explorations géométriques et minimalistes.
Elle a reçu le Prix de la Diversité Culturelle à la Biennale de Dakar en 2018.
